State of the Scribe: November 2024

That’s right it’s November. Spooks are spooked, and we’re back for another month of surprisingly few fimfiction updates. You’ll notice one story here finished: Second String. The cover for this story is in progress, and I’ve seen some draft copies. As soon as it gets finished, the story will be able to get its fimfiction release. The same is true for Family of Chaos, which will get its final chapter next month. We’re making progress, honest!

There’s another new story coming soon too, though it currently has no title. This story will be ponies on earth transformation, with voting/reader feedback elements driving the events. I can’t say for sure when the first chapter will be posted though, since it needs a cover. Soon, hopefully!

While I wait in limbo for those covers, I’ll keep writing the stories on patreon, as well as creating new ones! those other stories might not be pony, but they do at least have some of the fun TV stuff I’m known for. I’ll share a bit about each one here, as well as mentioning what else is going on in the background for me.

I’m also waiting on the cover for the hardcover print of Words of Power. The extra words (quite a few of them!) have been edited, and are ready to go. As soon as I get the cover back from Ace, I’ll be able to go straight to proofing. But I’m not in control of how long that takes, so I’m waiting alongside everyone else.

Looking forward to an awesome NANOWRIMO. Doing cowriting for the first time, which I think will be fun. Or a disaster, guess I’ll find out at the end of the month. But if it works, I’m hoping for a 75k nano, albeit written by two people. Most of an epic fantasy all in one month! Maybe another 30-40 to go.

But I’ll keep this short and sweet. I’ll throw in a description of the still-running stories, in case you’re interested.

And while we’re looking at it, a few new stories are hard to map on the calendar. Fangs, feathers, and Flames is still happening, but its updates are unreliable. Stories like that are exactly why I want to wait before putting something on fimfiction. I don’t want to post a story that won’t finish. Even Hand of the Ancients finally made it across the finish line!

But I’m hoping that these books… playing Koi and Ravana’s Shadow anyway… will make it to real publication of their own one day. Not Another Day at Unity, I don’t much want Nintendo to sue me out of existence. But you get the idea. I may be writing less pony than I used to, but I’m not writing less. Somehow.

More pony to follow soon. Hopefully next month I’ll see at least one of the five covers I’m waiting on.

Now, for the descriptions of my current stories.

First, Ravana’s Shadow. This story is the sequel to Forerunner’s Child, a story about a remote human colony in the distant future (the same future as in Message in a Bottle, though this is non-pony). The colony, as it turns out, is run by children, without a single adult in their population. How and why did this happen? What’s really going on? Follow Kit, an astronaut from ancient Earth, as she tracks down those mysteries, and ultimately becomes a part of the Mara colony.

Playing Koi is among the silliest projects I’ve ever written. It explores a magical fish aquarium at a local mall, where the residents are all fish-sized merpeople. Our heroine ventures into the aquarium to track down her missing girlfriend, only to discover a strange world of time dilation, homicidal cannibals, and maybe kinda-sorta jumpstart an underwater industrial revolution? https://www.patreon.com/collection/655220?view=expanded

Finally, the newest weekly story, Another Day at Unity. This story explores the same setting from Spirits of Change, a Pokémon world inspired by His Dark Materials. In this world, every human is born with their soul outside their body, in the form of a Pokémon. These Pokémon decide your lot in life, and work together with their human to advance each others’ goals. After the events of Spirits of Change, a school is built with the intent of educating new legendary and mythical children, as their powers make them exceptionally dangerous. This story is an anthology, beginning and occasionally visiting this school, while showing off some more interesting aspects of that world.
