State of the Scribe: December 2025

Kindof amazing I’m still doing these after all these years. But here we are with another monthly calendar, and the end of another year. A fair amount of news, though not as much of it is pony as it once used to be. Let’s get into it.

I’ll hit up the pony first so anyone who only cares about that can tap out. No new stories this month so far as that goes. Focused primarily on the ongoing shortfics, as well as the (almost) weekly vote-driven story Quarantine. These are all long-running, so I’ll not go into a ton of detail about what each of these is, except at the end with my usual short summaries and description. Of these, Legio IX should be finished early into next year. The other two shortfics are likely going to be joining us for at least the rest of next year. With Quarantine, I anticipate something similar at the current pace. It feels like about 150k of story to go. But then again, it’s also vote driven, so the readers could just get Wayfinder killed in the next chapter and end it. Crossing my fingers that doesn’t happen.

I’ve been trying to wrap up my ongoing pony projects as much as possible and transition to original fiction. Anyone who followed me has seen that happen–and it probably will continue to happen. I really hope I can avoid taking on any other large pony projects. That said, I intend to finish every story I started, the way I intended. After that… we’ll see where I end up. Who knows, maybe G6 will be more interesting than G5.

Then again, I’m not a kid anymore. Looking back at my early fiction, I was still largely in school, writing as a modest hobby (or an alternative to working in food service, then as an RA. You’d think they got paid better lol). These days, I’m firmly in the camp that I’d prefer to write fiction that I can publish one day, even if it’s something small and indie like the Forerunner’s Child books. Given the choice, I’d prefer to follow that path.

But I’m still here until the stories are finished. I’ve had a blast getting here, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support to this point. Anyone who opens one of my unfinished stories can continue to do so with the confidence that I will finish them so long as I’m alive to do so.

Alright, so there’s two newer stories on the docket here, one from last month, and one that’s entirely new (to everyone here, at least).

“Into the Everwood” is my take on the Bloomburrow/Redwall type setting. Small wild animals, a medieval/magical setting, wars to fight and mysteries to solve. It’s an anthro setting, though you’ll find plenty of my usual hallmarks (like TF), ancient technology, vague human influence, etc. I’m hoping to see it work as a series, it’s one of those worlds that has so much going on it could sustain several books with ease. If you’d like to see a pair of brave squirrel twins facing creatures much bigger and stronger than they are, this book is where to go. I can’t wait to have some art to share, but I don’t have any quite yet.

Then comes Layers of Change–a working title while I figure out what I’m really going to name the story. This one is founded on the premise of a hollow earth: an infinitely recursive hollow earth, where our same planet becomes increasingly bizarre the deeper down you travel. The story follows a true shapeshifter (at least he becomes one early on), which in this world are one of the most feared and dangerous beings–as they can travel freely between layers and take forms suited to each one.

I really wanted a tf story that was perpetually able to do something new. The first book will probably have a fair bit of TG, though plenty of other transformations too. This novel was also my first co-written project, with my editor Bitera! He wrote the antagonist’s perspective, which I hope will give it an interesting and radically different tone than the parts I wrote.

A story that can perpetually be a tf story where someone is adjustig to being whatever else they’ve become, since they can always be forced to move when they start adjusting to their body.

Otherwise, we’re holding pace with the existing stories. Mostly focused on finishing up with the pony stories. If the year treats me well, I should be able to tie them all off. We’ll see what comes next. I’m still here for the moment, still writing. Thanks to everyone who continues to read my work, imperfect as it is. I’ve learned so much doing this, and I hope to be able to keep improving for a while longer.

PS: Surgery went well and I’m healed up now. Back to regular writing schedule after almost a month got devoured. I’m so happy to be back at the keyboard.
